The Holy Spirit!
Text: Acts 1 v 8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and unto the ends of the earth.

What is “The Holy Spirit”?

The Holy Spirit is an aspect or agent of God through which He communicates with people or act on them and through them.

The Holy Spirit is God’s power in action or His active force. (Micah 3 v 8) (Luke 1 v 35).

The Holy Spirit is God`s active force that projects His energy to any place to accomplish His Will (Psalm 104 v 30), (Psalm 139 v 7).

The Holy Spirit illuminates the minds of people and makes them yearn for God and spiritual truth.

The Holy Spirit reveals God`s thoughts to believers and guides them into the knowledge of the truth.

The Holy Spirit helps believers in their weaknesses and intercedes for them.

Why Is the Holy Spirit referred to as an invisible force?

Biblically, the Holy Spirit is referred to as an invisible force because He possesses the following characteristics;

  1. The Breath of God (Habakkuk 2 v 19, Revelation 13 v15
  2. The Wind of God (Genesis 8v 1, John 3 v 8
  3. The vital or animation force in living creatures- Job 34 v 14 -15
  4. The power seen in the angels of God- 1 Kings 22 v 21, John 4 v 24
  5. The hand or finger of God; Psalm 8 v31, Psalm 19 v 1, Luke 11 v 20, Matthew 12 v 28
  6. God Himself: Genesis 1 v 1 – 3

Why Do I say that the Holy Spirit is God Himself?

The Scriptures reveals to us that the Holy Spirit is God Himself or is the nature of God or the power of God in action (Exodus 15 v 8 -10). Just like the hands of a craftsman cannot function independently without His mind and body, the Holy Spirit of the living God operates just as God directs it (Luke 11 v 13).

The following points buttress the fact that the Holy Spirit is God Himself;

  1. Acts 5 v 3-4; in this verse of scripture, Paul confronts Ananias and asked him why he had lied to the Holy Spirit who represented God and not men. This is a clear declaration that lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God.
  2. The Holy Spirit possesses the characteristics of God and therefore is God. The omnipresence of the Holy Spirit is evident in Psalm 139 v 7-8; which says; where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
  3. The Holy Spirit alone knows the thoughts of God: 1 Corinthians 2 v 10-11 says; “But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The spirit searches all things even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man`s spirit within him. In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
  4. The Holy Spirit is a divine person because He possesses a mind, emotions and will. The Holy Spirit thinks and knows us internally and externally; (1 Corinthians 2 v 10).
  5. The Holy Spirit can be grieved (Ephesians 4v 30).
  6. The Holy Spirit is our intercessor (Romans 8 v 26-27).
  7. The Holy Spirit is God, the third Person of the Trinity because He functions as our comforter and counselor just as Jesus promised us that he would be in John 14 v 16 and 26 and in John 15 v 26)

Why did God anoint believers with His Holy Spirit?

God anoint believers with His Holy Spirit as a stamp of His eternal pledge and as surety for a new beginning of holy living once they surrender to His Will and plan.

God is not a man that He would lie neither is He the son of man that He would repent. When God makes a promise, our faith in Him enables us to believe it, our hope in Him anticipates it and our patience waits for it and enables it to come to pass.

It is not only a specific set of believers that are anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Just as God anointed Jesus Christ of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power according to Acts10 v 38, we are all anointed with the same Spirit.

Through the Holy Spirit, all believers are anointed with;

  1. The Kingly anointing: according to 2 Chronicles 29 v 1-31; we all have a kingly anointing to be victorious in the battle against sin, temptation and evil just like Jesus was.
  2. The Priestly anointing: We are all equipped with the priestly anointing to pray, praise and worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth. If Jesus was able to fulfill his priestly ministry as the Lamb of God whose blood was shed to take away our sins, we all can do the same because we are a royal priesthood according to 1 Peter 2 v 9. We therefore have a priestly anointing to pray for ourselves and intercede for others and our prayers can come to pass if we can exercise faith and just believe.
  3. Prophetic Anointing: We have the prophetic anointing to preach to others and bring the good news of salvation to their doorsteps. We are encouraged to bless and proclaim the good news of salvation to the poor, to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim freedom to the captives, to those in mourning and despair according to Isaiah 61 v 1-3 and Luke 4 v 18-19.

What is the Role of the Holy Spirit?

  1. The Holy Spirit is the helper and revealer of all truths (1 John 14 v 26)
  2. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin (John 16 v 7-8)
  3. The Holy Spirit provides us with wise counsel (Isaiah 11 v 2)
  4. The Holy Spirit dwells in believers and fills them up (1 Corinthians 3 v 16)
  5. The Holy Spirit is a source of revelation, wisdom and power (1 Corinthians 2 v 10-11).
  6. God gives us the Holy Spirit so that we can know Him better. The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of believers to the hope of salvation and their inheritance in Christ; Ephesians 1 v 17 -20.
  7. The Holy Spirit, guides believers in all truth John 16 v 13 -15
  8. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to believers 1 Corinthians 12 v 7 – 11
  9. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weaknesses and intercedes for us; Romans 8 v 26 -27
  10. The Holy Spirit is a seal in the lives of believers. He is our mark of adoption as God`s children; Ephesians 1 v 13
  11. The Holy Spirit makes believers new and gives them eternal life; John 3 v 3-7, Titus 3 v 5
  12. The Holy Spirit makes us holy and sanctifies us; (Romans 8 v 10-11)
  13. The Holy Spirit enables believers to bear good fruit and enables them to avoid sin and iniquity; Galatians 5v 16-21
  14. The Holy Spirit controls the believer who yields to God and submits himself to God`s Word; (Romans 12 v 1and 2, Ephesians 5 v 18, Colossians 3 v 16)
  15. The Holy Spirit dwells in believers permanently even when they have sinned and grieved him. When they repent, he returns; (Ephesians 4 v 30)
