Hope

Literally, hope means to trust in, wait for, look for or desire something or someone; or to expect something beneficial in the future.
Hope is also described as a wish, or the strength of an individual’s desire.

What is hope according to the Bible?

Hope is the confident expectation of what God has promised and the unyielding belief in His faithfulness. Hope can also be described as a strong and confident expectation. Hope is futuristic. It is the sure certainty that what God has promised will occur in accordance with God‘s sure Word.

Biblical hope is not an escape from reality or from the challenges of life. It is there to encourage us to keep a positive attitude no matter what the issues of life may be.
Even when life beats us down with trials, sorrows and debilitating worries, when life seem hopeless, God’s message about our future hope can deeply encourage us. Due to the present events in our world today. It’s very easy to lose hope in the leadership, people, loved ones and even in ourselves especially when life does not go the way we want. When we feel that we are still in square one, at the same spot, at status quo, if we are not careful, it can begin to affect the way we think, see, perceive and react to things.

We must rely on God because He alone can calm our fears and our anxieties. He alone can get us back on our feet. He alone can reassure us and make us understand that we can survive anything that the world throws at us.

For every one of us, a flicker of hope is all we need in times of despair and God is able and capable of doing the impossible in our lives, world, home and families. We should therefore focus on what will happen once the storms of life have passed away. We will regain the strength to overcome our fears and anxieties if we do not lose hope.

God will never give us tasks that we cannot handle, once He gives us a task, He equips us with the grace to handle them in such a way that the struggles of life would not overwhelm us. Struggles are there to make us stronger only if we can start a new chapter.

We must therefore hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering because God never fails. He always keeps His promises. God will never leave us or forsake us in our time of need. He will always be there for us.
Tough times never last but tough people do. If we do not lose hope, we will look back and realize that the struggles of life were not there to intimidate us but they were there to make us stronger. We will look back at them after we have been able to overcome them and say a prayer of gratitude to God.

We must keep our hopes up at all times even if we do not see any need to do so. As believers, our hope is founded on the rock of our faith; in the one God, who underscores all we see and touch.
Our God is a living God, an ever present help in times of trouble. He is the hope of the hopeless and to all who believe in Him and call upon Him in prayer.

We should therefore put our trust and our unfailing hope in God because He will never leave us or forsake us.

We all have tasks to complete this year, all we need to do is to forge ahead and keep our hopes up knowing very well that if we do our own part, God will do His own part because He makes everything beautiful in His time.

Types of Hope

  1. True hope; Psalm 62v5: God is the only true hope. True hope puts us in check. It is not lazy or recalcitrant. It keeps working, keeps improving, never goes out of fashion , is up to date, used to technology but above all this, it is solely reliant on God and God alone. True hope looks to the future and does not live in the past. It encourages itself and tries to work on its imperfections. True hope works hard to be the best that it can be knowing that God`s grace is available and sufficient to do all things.
  2. False hope; Psalm 33v17: False hope is self-reliant and it may sometimes rely on wealth, talents and other man-made things. False hope always disappoints, it never lasts and will eventually fail. It may also lead to disappointment and shame. It is self-serving and narcissistic. This kind of hope does not glorify God even though it tries to paint a picture of an outward reliance on God.
We must never have false hope. False hope is when we trust in something else other than the Lord. Anything that we trust in apart from the Lord will surely fail us. Riches will fail us. Man will fail us but God will never fail us.
